We are first and foremost a research and evidence-based preschool. We take the best from Waldorf, Montessori and Reggio Emilia methods and wrap it up in a nature-based environment. We are nature and play based because the research shows that it is the healthiest environment for children to be in. They will develop their physical, social, emotional and mental capacities best in an environment that is open-ended and natural.
We are interested in allowing your child to learn about the world around him in a natural, fluid way based on her own interests and inclinations rather than some arbitrary information that has little to do with his experiences. Your child will learn concepts in a tangible form as they are relevant to him. She will know when certain fruits are ripe based on weather and what’s happening around her, not from a poster on the wall. Only experience teaches and your child will be engaged in experiences here all day long.
We balance teacher led activities such as circle time and snack time with child led activities of play. We also have a strong work component in our school that the children do participate in. It is not forced upon the child in a dogmatic way, but rather just something every child participates in. We water our garden, help prepare snack, set the table, wash our dishes after snack and have a rotating chore chart in the classroom. We believe children’s, as well as adults’, self esteem is based largely on being able to make a meaningful contribution. Whether that contribution be input during a story or their creative play or participating in meal prep, children thrive when they feel like they are doing valuable work.
Mostly, our school is a place for children to be children. It is a sanctuary away from marketing, consumerism, media, technology and the noise that often fills a child’s world these days. Children are free to play, get dirty and let themselves be seen, heard and valued. We put a very strong value here on childhood itself. We honor it, respect it, cherish it and protect it.
Our teachers are trained in respectful communication strategies, solution based conflict resolution and inclusive group behavior dynamics. We approach classroom management in a gentle, respectful and inclusive manner.
